10 days in Southmead hospital

Partly this is a post to check if the blog is set up and working. Nick is obviously still poorly but surprisingly positive and cheerful. From the medical perspective, keeping blood pressure stable is a priority issue and prerequisite for moving out of ICU to a post operation ward.

From Nick’s point of view, not being able to sit higher than 45 degrees is very tedious – there’s a limit to the entertainment derived from a few ceiling tiles and a light. Also not being able to tighten his stomach muscles to produce a good cough is very annoying, and a concern of the doctors too.

Luckily Southmead ICU seems to be a fantastic, new, well equipped department, staffed entirely by lovely people.

  1. This is dad wheeled out onto the balcony with mum and two attentive nurses. Too hot really and, from dad’s perspective a view of not so interesting sky!

  2. Great idea to share what’s happening! I am already back in Belgium. Stopped in Veurne to eat some shrimp croquettes.

  3. Well Nick I never thought you would be using leading edge technology I have to say you have chosen a pretty extreme path to get there 😀 it’s good to hear you sounding so positive in the circumstances. I have a mental picture of a Hattie Jaques lookalike nurse turning you over in the night. Don’t forget we are due a walk round the airfield checking out wildlife areas. Keep us all up to date with progress All the best. Phil. (Love to Diana)

    • Hi thanks for this. Walking unlikely. Do we know anyone in the gliding club who is interested in wild life or flowers. Spouses? Have you looked at the DEFRA magic map for the site?

  4. Nick, so sorry to learn about your accident. Justin, Gillian, Mike Pope and Rod Witter have all been asking about you and send their best wishes as do I. Have you had any neurological recovery ? We all wish you a speedy recovery. Jon

    • Many thanks. Yes, bit of a recovery. Looks promising. Reflex responses look quite good but voluntary ones have some distance to go.

  5. Hi Nick,
Andrew just sent the details of your blog. Helmsley Probus have all been asking for news.
We all wish you a speedy recovery and hope the stay in hospital isn’t too onerous.

  6. Jacqui and I wish you a speedy recovery and we send our love to Diana and yourself. On a practical note is there anything we could do to help up here i.e watering the garden or mowing the grass?
You are on our thoughts. This technology is new to me so I hope it all works!!
